Toyota hybrids crack 50,000 Australian sales

Camry hybrid accounts for more than half of all Australian Toyota hybrid sales…

They started out as a novelty and some likened them to driving a science experiment on wheels, but Toyota is having the last laugh as they deliver their 50,000th hybrid to an Australian customer.

Statistics released by Toyota Australia today show hybrid sales are on the increase, and while you may instantly think Prius when talking Toyota hybrids, the big success story has been the Camry hybrid.

In all, 25,400 have been sold, making the mid-sized sedan the country’s best-selling hybrid vehicle by far.

Australians have bought more than 18,600 Prius hybrids since the model arrived in 2001.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb says Australians are increasingly accepting hybrids as a genuine alternative.

“If Toyota’s hybrid cars were viewed as a stand-alone franchise, it would rank in the top 20 for sales – ahead of well-established brands such as Chrysler, Land Rover, Peugeot, Renault and Volvo.”
