A large number of the top-selling Toyota HiAce van are involved in a recall over safety concerns surrounding the design of the transmission selector.
The Toyota HiAce recall is being overseen by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and affects vehicles built between December 2009 and March 2012.

The recall notice says that on the involved vehicles the related gear position (P_R_N_D) may not match the expected vehicle behaviour, i.e. unable to shift out of Park or shift out of a forward or reverse drive position (D_R).
Unable to shift out of Park or shift out of a forward or reverse drive position (D_R) may increase the risk of an accident.
Affected Toyota HiAce owners will be contacted by Toyota Australia by mail at their last known address, inviting them to make an appointment with their preferred Toyota Dealer.
The recall will be carried out free of charge.
