Toyota Australia has officially announced when it will end manufacturing vehicles in Australia this year.
On October 3 the last Toyota Camry will roll off the production line at the Altona plant in Melbourne.
The announcement comes after 54 years of local manufacturing.
The confirmation comes after the company decided it would cease production three years ago as the operation has become unviable due to high costs and the Australian dollar.
Model completion will be staggered with the Toyota Aurion stopping in August, Toyota Camry Hybrid in September and finally the Toyota Camry finishing in October.
Approximately 2600 workers face losing their jobs as a result of the closure with Toyota retaining 1300 staff mainly in office roles.
Toyota Australia President Dave Buttner is still focused on the task at hand.
“Our employees are committed to producing vehicles of the highest quality and our priority over the remaining months is to continue to support our employees in every way possible so that they are well prepared for the future.”
