Skoda’s best-selling car hits new highs
Less than a year after celebrating 20 years in continuous production, Skoda has paused to mark the production of the 20 millionth Skoda Octavia.
Skoda also celebrated the production of its 15 millionth car under VW ownership last week.
Originally a part of the ‘old Skoda’, the Octavia was initially built between 1951 and 1971 (seen below) and in that time 65,400 ran off the production lines.
Skoda Octavia production restarted again in 1996 (under Volkswagen).
The second-generation Octavia, built between 2004 and 2013, remains the most sought-after version with more than 2.6 million built.
But the current car, which has been in production since 2012, is likely to end up surpassing that number.
Already, nearly 1.6 million third-gen Octavias have been built.
Production chief at Skoda, Michael Oeljeklaus, says the Octavia is a very special car.
“No other model has run off Skoda’s production lines more often than the Octavia,”
“It is the heart of our brand.”
