General Motors (GM) this week unveiled a new ‘concierge’ in-car system that allows you to carry out tasks while you’re driving.
These tasks include things like ordering a coffee ahead of arriving at your destination, or booking a hotel room on the go – all through the on-dash touchscreen and Wi-Fi connection.
It’s called ‘Marketplace’ and we can expect to see it in Holden cars sold in Australia in the next couple of years.
But there are concerns the new tech is just too distracting for drivers.
“There’s nothing about this that’s safe,”
“If this is why they want Wi-Fi in the car, we’re going to see fatality numbers go up even higher than they are now.”
A GM spokesperson said the tech was designed in accordance with voluntary driver-distraction guidelines agreed to by car companies.
And that the apps (that work in Marketplace) also have limits to how many steps a user must complete to place an order, which he said are “typically three to four”.
