Red Bull introduces jet fighter canopy to F1

Red Bull has announced that it will debut its take on the halo system in Russia this weekend.

The squad proposed a windshield style device which wraps around the cockpit, offering increased head protection for the driver.

Team boss Christian Horner suggested in Shanghai that the team could try the device this weekend, with a number of tests having been carried out since to ensure its safety.

Those included having a wheel fired at it along with trials in the simulator.

Both Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat have said they’re happy with the development, which the team has confirmed will be fitted to the car in opening practice.

It follows Ferrari running an ungainly halo style system during winter testing, a solution put forward by Mercedes.

Drivers and the FIA have been vocal in their desire for increased head protection in the wake of the deaths of Jules Bianchi and Justin Wilson.
