But, as 2018 starts to open up, Peugeot Australia, and the team at Peugeot Citroen Automobiles (PCA) are feeling confident that things are now heading in the right direction.
And it looks like well placed confidence too.
In the past eight months Peugeot sales in Australia have jumped ahead 36% year on year and there’s been a generally very positive reception among Aussie SUV buyers for the new 3008 SUV (as reviewed here).
Now there’s another new SUV from Peugeot that is landing in dealerships – the Peugeot 5008, and we’re attending the Australian launch of that vehicle today.
I can’t bring you a review, that is embargoed until next week, however I can say that the new Peugeot looks to be a seven-seat SUV with a good story to tell.
There’s a petrol engine, and a diesel, proper auto transmission (i.e. no CVT), flexible seating, including a fold-flat front passenger seat (as seen below), and plenty of standard gear, including autonomous emergency braking and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
We’ll bring you all the fine details on the model next week.
In the meantime, new PCA boss, Anouk Poelmann, has spoken of the job still ahead for the brand in Australia.
She said that while Australia is one of the most competitive automotive markets in the world, opportunities presented if you made the right moves and had the right product.
She said Peugeot cars might not be the cheapest in the market, and they won’t be filling every possible niche, but the brand is focusing heavily on winning over buyers who want high-spec and high-tech vehicles.
“We are focusing on the personality of the brand, who we are and what our personality is.” she said.
And the new boss made no secret of the fact that the brand is targeting traditional Mazda and Honda buyers.
While PCA has experienced a great deal of change behind the scenes over the past 8 months, including moving into a new head office, and are continuing to work towards improving the showroom and general customer service experience.
It will be fascinating to watch how the Australian car buying public responds.
We will bring you all the details on the new 2018 Peugeot 5008 SUV next week.
