Motorsport and watches have long been associated together. There was a time when the world’s biggest luxury watch manufacturers made watches in honor of races, cars, or drivers.
One of the most famous examples you’ll come across is TAG Heuer Monaco, named after the city and the quite popular race.
The Monaco was worn by none other than Steve McQueen in the 1970s racing, classic film Le Mans, and he sported the same watch for long after. Ever since McQueen debuted that watch in the film, watches made for motor sports have taken a new turn and the game changed over the years.
The one thing that hasn’t changed is the correlation between luxury watches and racing, and the fact that as one evolves, the other follow suit. These are some luxury watches associated with Motorsports.
The Rolex Daytona
It’s only natural to find arguably the world’s most renowned and luxurious watch brand in connection with motor sports. The Daytona is one of Rolex’s most famous and sought after creations, and it comes at a hefty price.
The company’s association with racing began when a movie star and avid racer Paul Newman started sporting the Daytona. By the end of 2017, Newman’s Rolex Daytona was auctioned and sold for $15.5 million!
That number made it the most expensive watch ever sold.
Baume & Mercier Capeland Shelby Cobra
This one dates back to 1963, and it ties the famed Baume & Mercier to the legendary sports car Shelby Cobra. Though the company didn’t have a direct association with the race car at first, they tied the race car’s legendary status to one of their most unique creations in the Capeland Shelby Cobra.
The company even issued some newer models over the course of the past few years in tribute to the drivers of the 60s, much like the Monaco worn by Steven McQueen. Even though the Monaco has been well known, Baume & Mercier had just as much of a timeless effect and look in regards to motor sports.
The Seiko Sportura
Seiko offered a line that wasn’t quite as expensive as some of the luxury watches that other companies issued. Their Sportura comes in unique colors and with an excellent design, making it one of the highly popular motor sports cars.
There are even entire F1 racing teams sporting them.
Omega is definitely going to have a piece of the cake and they did just that with the Speedmaster racing collection. The watch has all the Omega quirks and touches, alongside some really cool racing chronograph that would help drivers determine speed and distance.
Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme
Oris approached their racing line from a different angle, creating quite a unique design and special features. They probably did so because they sponsor several different racing teams, including Valtteri Bottas and the Audi Sport team.
The watch comes in a lightweight carbon fiber case, which has a modified chronograph movement.
They are something else
Luxury watches’ association with racing and Motorsports is not just a blast from the past. These brands still issue high-quality, uniquely designed watches to cater to the racing enthusiasts out there, and they do just that.
Watches designed for motor sports just have a unique quality to them. They’re neither classic watches nor sports ones; it’s something in between.
Their stylish designs and cool functions have prompted celebrities and athletes to use them over the years and they will probably continue to do so in the future.
