The smartphone meets the automobile with the new Lynk & Co brand set up by Volvo and parent company Geely.

It’s 12 months since we first reported on the establishment of the brand, today Lynk & Co is ready to start mass producing cars and then not selling them, instead, providing them to the public on a subscription basis (like your iPhone).

As production of the first Lynk & Co model, the 01 (pictured), gets ready to commence, Lynk & Co tell us they’ve received 6000 pre-orders for the vehicle after launching a special three-day online order period for the first cars.

All of the cars “sold” within just a couple of minutes and they say that makes the 01 the fastest selling car in history.

Official volume sales start this week, but at this stage there’s no word on the brand coming to Australia.

Interestingly, Lynk & Co has confirmed the early 01 SUVs will be powered by a petrol engine (all of these vehicles will go to China), when the brand launches in Europe the vehicles will be electric only.

Alain Visser is the Senior Vice President of Lynk & Co, he tells us things couldn’t be going better for the new brand.

“We started sales of our connected and shareable 01 SUV in record fashion. Whether you choose to join online or in store, we promise a unique and enjoyable experience.

Online, just stop on the car you like and subscribe online – it’s as simple as that, as Chinese customers have proven during our pre-sale event.

“We are immensely proud at the speed and scale of our launch. We promised to disrupt and shake things up, and now, the journey really begins.”
