The Hyundai i30 has today been crowned the Behind the Wheel Car of the Year.

The new-generation car, which landed in Australia in May, impressed our judges on several fronts, including pricing, quality, features and safety.

The 2017 win for Hyundai marks the second time the South Korean brand has claimed our top prize, stablemate the Elantra taking title back in 2015.

This year, the Hyundai offering managed to beat a strong field of finalists, including:

  • Volkswagen Golf 7.5
  • Volkswagen Arteon
  • MINI Countryman
  • Mazda CX-5
  • Mazda MX-5 RF
  • Audi Q5
  • Lexus LC 500
  • Range Rover SVAutobiography
  • Range Rover Velar
  • Kia Stinger
  • Holden Commodore SS V Redline
  • Honda CR-V
  • Subaru XV

Behind the Wheel Founder and CEO, Joel Helmes, says the Hyundai i30 was the car that really stood-out from the crowd.

“We consistently see the Korean car brands take big steps forward with each new-generation model – but the new-generation Hyundai i30 was a bigger leap than we’ve ever seen.

“Hyundai has a car here that will suit even the fussiest of buyers, all in a package that won’t break the bank.”

Fellow judge, Peter Barnwell, said the i30 should be on every small car buyers shopping list.

“A stunning car for the money across entire model range offering impressive performance and handling along with more accessible high-end driver assist technology.

“The locally calibrated dynamics make it smooth and controlled over a wide variety of road surfaces and the new Hyundai i30 has a sensibly laid out dash and comfortable seats.”

While judge, and Behind the Wheel Podcast co-host, Chris Miller, says the new i30 is simply the best Hyundai ever.

“It now competes on the same level as it’s European and Japanese counterparts, yet still retains the tremendous value the brand has been built on.

“Across the range, the i30 impresses with a great chassis, a suspension set up expertly tuned exactly to Australian conditions, and a level of fit and finish that could make luxury brands blush.”

Congratulations to Hyundai for their well deserved win!
