Mustang now quicker than ever
Ok, it might not be the safest car on the roads, but the Ford Mustang is certainly a whole lot of fun.
Now the V8-powered version gets up and moves even quicker in a new ‘Drag Strip’ mode that has just been announced in the U.S.
Not confirmed yet for Australia, though we will keep you updated, the new drive mode, according to Ford, helps propel the pony car to 60mph (97km/h) in less than 4 seconds.
They say that makes it quicker than a Porsche 911 Carrera!
How? Ford has tweaked the fuel injection and this has helped boost the 5.0 litre engine up from 435hp to 460hp (324kW to 343kW).
The Ford Mustang GT also benefits from a new 10-speed auto transmission and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres.
Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer, explains ‘Drag Strip’ mode.
“Typically, when you shift gears, you give up time,”
“In Drag Strip mode, the engine torque doesn’t drop when you’re shifting.
“You get peak engine torque and horsepower straight through thanks to our new Ford-built 10-speed transmission.”
The four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang has also been tweaked with the 310hp (231kW) engine getting an additional 30 lb.-ft. of torque (40Nm) for a new 350 lb.-ft. output (475Nm).
Ford tell us this helps propel the turbocharged Mustang to 60mph in under 5.0 seconds.
