It’s a vehicle that commands an enormous amount of attention, now Australian buyers will be able to sample the new plug-in hybrid BMW.
But, according to BMW, anyone interested in an i8 is going to need to be patient. Full-scale production of the i8 starts next month, but with customer orders already outstripping production estimates, joining the i8 owners club could be a tough assignment.
In Australia getting into an i8 could be an even harder proposition, BMW Australia General Manager of Corporate Communications Lenore Fletcher has told Behind the Wheel the i8 will only be coming here in very limited numbers.
Why is the i8 so popular? Well, aside from the very distinctive styling, the i8 offers performance to match – 0–100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds! But that’s not the best part, try average fuel consumption of just 2.1L/100km!!!
If you’re into technology the i8 will also boast optional laser headlights, which are said to be around 30 per cent more energy-efficient than the i8’s standard LED headlights and provide an illumination range of up to 600 metres.
As yet even BMW Australia doesn’t know, or aren’t saying, what the purchase price of the i8 is going to be when it arrives in the fourth quarter of the year.
