Driver distraction has proven to be the single biggest road safety issue to arise in the last decade or so.

While against the law, and with stiff fines and penalties in place, many drivers globally just won’t leave their phones alone while they are on the go.

Now Apple has filed a patent for a new system that will lock-out the person behind the wheel of a car, while not affecting the phones of other people travelling in the car.

According to this report from the UK, the technology, which would be built in to the Apple smartphone, could determine if it was moving by looking at data from GPS, phone towers or even images from the camera.

Visual clues, such as steering wheel proximity, would enable the device to calculate if its owner was driving the car or merely a passenger.

Remarkably, it could also differentiate between the interior of a car and a train carriage or seat on a bus, where safety features would be unnecessary.
