2017 Mazda MX-5 Road Test and Review…
Once again, for the money, the Mazda MX-5 brings more smiles per mile (or kilometre!) than just about anything else on the market.
The car attracts attention, it starts conversations and you’ll have people asking you to take them for a spin around the block.
I know, because all this happened to me in my week in the Mazda MX-5.
How much is it? That’s the most common question you should brace for, and then you get a really good response when you say “about $40,000”.
For the record, you can jump into a new Mazda MX-5 for as little as $33,340, though the hardtop RF is $38,550.
The good news is you won’t have to pay the extra for the auto transmission – I’ve driven both and trust me, you want the manual.
No turbo, nothing fancy under the bonnet, the Mazda MX-5’s 2.0 litre 118kW/200Nm provides adequate go to move the roadster along respectively.
But the manual certainly helps you get a lot more out of the engine.
Sitting down low on the road, getting in and out of the MX-5 is a challenge, less so with the hardtop folded away.
Once again, as per the launch drive, the new Mazda MX-5 handles exceptionally well and the seating position, almost over the back wheels, makes for really fun cornering.
Once again, there are some frustrations – the lump in the floor, the lack of cabin storage, lack of a reverse camera standard (it’s an option) and wind noise at speed.
But there are many more positives on the other side of the ledger, especially the five-star safety, smart electric folding roof, Mazda reliability and build quality, and the really reasonable pricing.
So I won’t go any further because really there isn’t more to say.
The new Mazda MX-5 is a love-able little rogue that is ideal for fun getaways, winding country roads and drives down to the beach.
