The market for small SUVs and crossovers continues to become more crowded and the Holden entry into the race is the Trax.
The model, a five door offering with a choice of two engines has been around for a little while, yet hasn’t really been a great hit with buyers.
Recently upgraded, the 2017 Holden Trax picked up some styling tweaks, as well as the inclusion of the handy Apple CarPlay technology.
A reverse camera and rear parking sensors/control also came into the baby Holden SUV.
The Trax Range
The Holden Trax line-up continues to be offered across variants – the basic LS, mid-spec LT, and the flagship LTZ.
All variants/model grades are front-wheel drive only.
There’s a choice of two engines in the base-model – a 103kW/178Nm 1.8 litre naturally-aspirated four cylinder and a 103kW/200Nm 1.4 litre turbo-petrol.
You also get the choice in the entry-level Trax of a six-speed manual or six-speed auto transmission.
On the LT and LTZ grade it’s the turbocharged engine/auto transmission combo only.
On the Road
I had the keys to models powered by the 1.4 litre engine, both auto and manual, and my pick is the manual transmission.
It provides you with sharper engine response and a sportier drive feel, its a shame you can’t opt for in the upper-spec variants.
Overall, it moves along acceptably well in town and on the open highway.
I’m yet to have a drive a drive of the 1.8 litre version.
The steering is nicely tuned and the handling, thanks to Australian-tuned suspension, is first class.
Firstly, a top priority for many buyers in this category – yes, it has quite a high seating position.
I found the Holden Trax to be bigger on the inside than what it might appear on the outside, with plenty of headroom front and back.
There’s also an impressive amount of legroom in the front, but a little crowded for rear seat passengers.
The 7″ touchscreen system works well and generally everything feels at an acceptable quality/fit level.
The Holden Trax is an acceptably well equipped and executed vehicle.
Overseas, the car is available with all-wheel drive, as well as diesel, they would be handy additions to the Trax in Australia, though there’s no word on when/if we might get those options.
With freshened up styling, five-star safety, realistic pricing, and good on-road manners, Holden’s Trax might yet attract more Aussie small SUV/crossover buyers into the future.
