Being overseen by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the recall affects only certain vehicles and affected owners will be contacted by Volkswagen Australia.
The recall notice advises that the detent lever of the child lock can break because it was damaged during the production process.
As a result of this an active child lock can unnoticeably be switched off.
This may lead to the rear doors being operable from inside the vehicle.
A child may be able to inadvertently open a rear door from the inside with the child lock on, potentially causing injury to a third party or increasing the risk of injury to occupants inside the vehicle.
A letter is being sent to affected Volkswagen Golf, Polo and Tiguan owners and further information is also available from Volkswagen Authorised Service Centres or Volkswagen Customer care on 1800 607 822.
