2016 Subaru WRX Premium Review

Two weeks in a Subaru WRX is a hard life. I’ll openly welcome your collective sympathy.

It’s a fantastic, flawless drive, this time round in the 2016 Subaru WRX Premium, a step up from the previous week’s base model with an automatic transmission.

There is a bit of a jump in price from the entry model to $46,890 but you do get a bit more for your money’s worth.

The interior comforts are where the main differences lie:

  • Smart keyless entry with push button start
  • Leather trim seats with powered driver’s seat
  • Standard Subaru touchscreen with sat nav
  • Auto dimming mirror, headlights and wipers
  • Harmon Kardon speaker system
  • Electric sunroof

Good to note the ignition button is located on the right of the steering wheel (where it should be) and the touchscreen is encompassed by touch sensitive buttons.

There is also a camera on the left wing mirror for the side view which shows up on the smaller HUD screen when you shift into reverse concurrently with the rear view camera on the larger screen. A smart but rarely seen feature which should be more common.

Externally they are the same; side skirts, twin exhaust pipes, air intakes and front grille. While it’s a similar story under the bonnet where you’ll find the 2.0L turbo engine capable of 197kW and 350Nm.

However, the auto doesn’t have the same kick as the manual.

Though acceleration is smooth and gradual, the 8-speed CVT may be too much so and obviously doesn’t offer a tactile experience.

To attain more purchase from the drivetrain, you have a selection of three drive modes like the ones found in the Forester or Liberty, and like most Subaru’s, the WRX range comes in AWD.

Having said that, the auto version is probably the more ‘liveable’ of the two as I touched on in the previous review of the manual WRX.

And while it may not seem as quick, dynamics and ride comfort are still the same and secure stable when travelling at higher speeds.

Safety in the Premium is also upgraded, fitted with a front stereoscopic camera providing safety Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Change Assist, High Beam Assist plus Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

My pick would be the WRX premium with the manual transmission. You get all the extra features with all the fun and control that a manual provides.
