The Peugeot 308 GTI 270 is just that car and I was fortunate to pilot it once more after having just a taste of it at a track day before the start of the year.
This is coupled with a beefy 330Nm of torque makes the most of the 1.6 litre turbo engine when in Sports mode in particular.
It really is amazing what they can do with a turbo engine nowadays generating immense and immediate power as is demonstrated in the abilities of the Peugeot 308 GTI.
You won’t be able to wipe the smile off your face as you manoeuvre this compact offering around with direct handling, excellent traction and rocket acceleration.
It grips safely around corners aided by the Torsen limited slip differential that appropriately redistributes torque to the wheels based on any loss of traction and on the track you experience it at its full potential.
There is comfort in the drive and a sense of sportiness with the ballsy exhaust note, though the ride will be harder given the larger 19” alloy wheels and lower profile tyres.
Carbon disc brakes with red callipers and GTI badging add visual interest to the generally cool and sporty look which I think is more attractive than the, dare I say, boring VW Golf. The GTI 270 also comes in a unique optional red and black dual colour paint job.
The Peugeot 308 GTI puts up a good case for the Behind the Wheel’s Car of the Year.
It’s equally eye-catching on the interior with sports bucket seats lined by suede-ish Alcantara material inserts and red stitching. Lumbar and massage functions are available for front seat passengers in the GTI 270 only.
The stitching continues through the cabin on the leather steering wheel and doors as well as rear seats.
The compact, flat-bottom wheel feels nice in your hands is perfectly moulded to give the driver complete control and feel for the road surface.
Changing gears is trouble free with a nicely tuned clutch and smooth shifter that gives a defined jolt into the gates as you manipulate the six-speed manual gearbox.
Certainly the most unique feature of the cabin view is the driver’s instrument cluster with the gauges situated high on the dash like a head-up display, leaving the driver not needing to glance and not through the steering wheel.
When slipped into Sports mode the display will show important performance info such as power, boost and torque, a throttle map and g-force monitor.
Other standard features include a 10” touch screen with sat nav, dual zone climate, reverse camera, push button start, a tyre pressure monitor, electric and heated folding mirrors, hill hold and electric park brake.
All of this will set you back $49,990 which is slightly more than a Volkswagen Golf GTI. The 308 250 is available for $5000 less.
I just loved driving this car; it’s fun and dynamic. It has everything I could want in a sporty hatch – powerful acceleration, manoeuvrability, assuredness and comfort. And not to mention it looks pretty handsome.
