Lexus launch the new RC 200t and Joel Helmes got a drive.
Three new/updated Lexus models launched in one day today and it was the 2016 Lexus RC 200t that seemed to draw the most smiles from my motoring writer colleagues.
Coming on the back of the introduction of the V6 powered Lexus RC 350 earlier in the year, the new version of the Lexus sports coupe is what’s called the entry-level model into the RC range, it doesn’t feel it though!
Powered by the spritely and willing 180kW/350Nm 2.0 litre turbo-petrol engine, the new RC 200t is priced from just $64,000.
I had the opportunity to get the new Lexus two-door sports coupe out on some very impressive and suitably winding roads around the ACT today and I came back grinning from ear to ear.
Where the RC 350 feels a bit dull and heavy, the Lexus RC 200t is nimble and better balanced. Sure, the engine isn’t blessed with a whole heap of power and torque (relatively speaking), but the smooth and enthusiastic way the power comes on is extremely pleasing.
But it’s in the bends where the new 2016 Lexus RC 200t really shines.
Nimble and well-balanced with a chassis that is taught and compliant, Lexus finally has a two-door model that won’t break the bank and provides the drive experience to make you feel great.
The icing on the cake is that this is a very easy car to live with. Switch out of the Sport or Sport+ modes and you get a very sedate, quiet and comfortable car to get about in.
Plenty of standard luxury features and even some room in the boot and the back seat, the Lexus RC 200t is the sports car to own if you want fun, practicality and good fuel economy all wrapped up in one great looking and reasonably priced package.
Available in three specification levels – Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury, I look forward to spending more time with the new 2016 Lexus RC 200t in coming months.
