There’s a plethora of choice in the prestige mid-size car market nowadays and the 2015 Volvo S60 D4 is a worthy potential choice.

The Volvo S60 range starts at just under $50,000, a diesel-powered D4 model will set you back from $56,990 for the Kinetic grade model, I had a week getting about in the Luxury grade of the D4, an offering priced from $61,990.

The five-door Volvo S60 D4 sedan is powered by a 2.0 litre turbo-charged diesel engine that produces 133kW and 400Nm. Claimed combined fuel consumption is 4.2L/100kms and the Volvo will sprint from 0-100km/h in 7.4 seconds.

Naturally, that claimed fuel consumption is excellent and I can attest to the D4’s frugal nature with the trip computer showing a range of 950 plus kilometres on a full tank, based on city driving!

Interestingly, the S60 is longer, wider and heavier than the smaller Volvo V40 D4 that I reviewed last week, though the diesel engine in that model boasts an additional 7kW and claimed combined fuel consumption of 7.2L/100kms.

As with the smaller model, the S60 is offered with just the one transmission choice – an eight speed automatic.

Out on the road the turbo-diesel engine in the Volvo S60 provides spirited performance. There is some turbo-lag when the revs are down (a common trait with diesel engines), but the 400Nm ensures hills are easily climbed and overtaking comes with ease.

There are three drive modes to select – Eco, Elegance and Performance and you can also squeeze more life out of the diesel engine via pushing the transmission selector over to the ‘Sport Shift’ setting.

On the road the Volvo is an easy and pleasant vehicle to drive. The ride and handling are highlights, while the turning circle seemed better than that provided by the V40 and S60 Polestar. Brakes are excellent and the steering is light and direct enough.

Inside the S60 cabin you will find acceptable levels of legroom, though the roof-line is a touch low in the front. Cabin storage areas in the Volvo sedan are better than average in size and the leather seats are comfortable even after a good amount of time in them.

Both front seats are electrically adjustable, though seat heaters (available front and back) will cost you extra.

I thought the centre control panel was a little busy and complicated and this lets down what is an otherwise really pleasant place to be. The infotainment system is easy enough to navigate around and the graphics are attractive.

The vehicle I tested was fitted with the optional Driver Support Pack which adds features such as Blind Sport Alert, Cross Traffic Alert and Distance Control Cruise Control – all at an extra $5,000.

On the plus side, the 2015 Volvo S60 D4 comes with sat-nav and a reverse camera as standard.

Boot space in the S60 is disappointingly limited, particularly in depth and this is thanks to the placement of the spare wheel and tool kit etc. under the boot floor.

At this stage there isn’t an ANCAP safety rating for the Volvo S60.

Summing it up; the Volvo S60 D4 is a nicely constructed, quality vehicle that returns exceptional fuel economy and a nice enough drive experience. I genuinely like the vehicle.

Though, with a starting price just under $62,000 and with the vehicle I tested starting at just over $69,000, should we expect less than any of that?

There are a number of quality vehicles around the same size as the S60; the Peugeot 508, Infiniti Q50 and Skoda Octavia to name just three and all can be delivered for significantly less money.
