Joel Helmes road tests and reviews the 2015 Toyota HiLux.
The 2015 Toyota HiLux continues to provide all the elements that you would expect from a dual-cab 4×4 – load carrying capacity, respectable towing capacity, off-road ability and reasonable levels of comfort.
Sure, the current generation HiLux is starting to look its age, no question. But, it has been and continues to be a really well put together machine that is surprisingly easy to drive.
Under the bonnet of the Toyota HiLux Black Limited Edition is the tried and tested 3.0 turbo diesel that produces 175kW and 376Nm.
Fuel consumption comes in at 13.0L/100kms combined, though I did much better than this, I averaged just 11.2L/100kms in city driving.
Transmission choices are five-speed manual or five-speed auto and prices start at $53,240 for the manual and $55,990 auto.
The Black Edition picks up a number of; you guessed it, black additions, including:
- Black paint with red highlight strips
- Black mudflaps
- Black highlights on the alloy wheels
- Black side-steps
- Black roll-bar
- Black themed partial-leather cabin
Other standard features include sat-nav, reverse camera, trip computer, Bluetooth phone and streaming and auto headlights and wipers.
So, as you can see this is one well-presented and nicely featured truck.
On the road the Toyota HiLux feels big and solid, the overall length of the dual-cab 4×4 version is felt when parking and this is where the reverse camera is a handy addition.
The diesel engine is a little noisy, but the trade-off is plenty of low down grunt and more than respectable acceleration around town.
I tested out the manual version of the HiLux, and while the throw is a little longer than you might expect, the ratios are all what they should be and a sixth-gear would seem redundant.
The ride is firm but not uncomfortable, steering is heavy but not off-putting. The HiLux turning circle is reasonable without being great and the handling is actually pretty good for a tall 4×4 ute.
Legroom in the front is reasonably good, though rear legroom (as is the case in just about all dual-cab utes) is less than you might expect.
The side-steps are a definite advantage for older or younger people trying to hop into the rather high HiLux cabin.
One area where the 2015 Toyota HiLux lags a little behind some competitors is the towing capacity – the Toyota has a 2500kg braked towing capacity.
There is no sacrifice though with safety – the Toyota HiLux has a full five-star ANCAP safety rating.
Summing it up; the current generation Toyota HiLux continues to show those famous levels of Toyota build quality despite coming out of a production facility in Thailand.
The Black Edition draws plenty of attention on the road and really the HiLux is still an attractive proposition despite its seemingly dated look and general interior feel.
The 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine feels strong and dependable and the dual-cab’s cabin is comfortable enough for family duties.
It may have a whole heap more competition than ever before but the Toyota HiLux remains a ‘must drive’ for dual-cab 4×4 ute buyers.
