Our Car of the Week – 2015 Mercedes-Benz S600.

Right, so you might have noticed that our Car of the Week winners are certainly a diverse bunch!

From the Foton Tunland to the Bentley Continental GT, the focus is on looking at vehicles that generally we don’t get to spend too much time or attention on at Behind the Wheel.

That’s why this week’s Car of the Week – the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S600, was such a worthy choice.

How can we put this with sounding offensive? Mercedes-Benz is a well-regarded and much-loved luxury car brand that makes terrific cars right up from the entry-level A-Class to some of those amazing AMG sports models.

But, if money is no object, does the Mercedes-Benz name hold enough street-cred to keep you in good favour with neighbours who aren’t seen in anything less than a Rolls-Royce or a Bentley?

In other words, would a car like the S600 make you look rich, but not quite really rich? The reason we pose this question is that we are talking a vehicle that starts from $417,500! Then, you could easily spend another $50,000 on customization and optional extras.

Remember that a Bentley Flying Spur sedan, which also boasts a twelve-cylinder engine, is priced from around the same money as the German model. It’s an interesting question and you would have to think that for some quite well-off individuals the Mercedes-Benz might not get a look-in.

That’s a shame, this car really has just about everything. By the way, no we aren’t forgetting the Mercedes-Maybach S 600, it’s just we can’t see too many private buyers driving off in a vehicle primarily aimed at car services.

Under the bonnet of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S600 is a 390kW/830Nm 6.0 litre V12 engine. The transmission is a seven-speed automatic and the S600 is a rear-wheel drive offering.

Before we talk fuel economy, remember that the S600 weighs-in at nearly two and a quarter tonnes! Alright, around town expect your Mercedes-Benz saloon to drink 16.4L/100km and a combined 11.3L/100km, in all, pretty impressive given we are talking 12 cylinders.

Standard features for your $417,500 include;

  • 19” alloy wheels
  • 13 speaker stereo
  • Power adjustable steering column
  • Powered blinds for rear and rear-side windows
  • Front, side and rear cameras

There’s no doubt our Car of the Week is a pretty cool offering and while it might not stand-out in the crowd like a Bentley, maybe that’s a good thing? We love the styling of the current S-Series around here and think that flagship model, and that 830Nm V12 engine, would be pretty sweet.
