Tips to avoid car theft – whether you drive a new or old car, a steering wheel lock is a great investment and might provide enough of a deterrent to keep your car safe.

Car theft continues to be a problem despite better security measures being built-in to modern vehicles.

But as the protection technology has improved, so has the expertise of car thieves. Also, not everyone drives a car with built-in protection and older cars are regularly targeted by car thieves.

Fortunately you don’t have to be a car theft statistic, no matter how new or old your car is, so long as you use common sense and follow some really basic steps to avoid car theft.

Seven Tips to Avoid Car Theft:

  • Always try to park your car in well-lit public areas.
  • Make sure you take documents such as insurance and registration certificates out of your vehicle – they could help thieves’ on-sell the car.
  • Remember to lock your vehicle when in you’re in paying for petrol and never leave your car running, or unlocked and unattended, anywhere (even in your garage or driveway).
  • While they aren’t as popular as they used to be, a visible safety device such as a steering wheel lock may just slow down or deter that would-be thief.
  • Remember to keep your doors locked as you drive along, especially with newer cars, as carjacking is a very real problem.
  • Install an audible alarm system and/or vehicle immobilizer system.
  • Consider installing a GPS tracking system.

Don’t forget to also protect your license plates from theft with simple to fit and inexpensive anti-theft locking screws and keep your car insurance paid, just in case!
