BMW plans to simplify things

We’ve recently reported on BMW’s plans to rethink their pitch to younger car buyers and also significantly increase production in coming years.

Now comes another new strategy from the Munich-based auto powerhouse – simplification!

BMW currently has 19 different models available in Australia, not including MINI, but plans to simplify things aren’t expected to spread to a culling of individual models.

Instead, the brand’s finance chief Nicolas Peter says the scissors will be taken to the gearbox and engine choices offered to buyers.

Including removing the manual transmission option from some models.

While Mr Peter told Automotive News the number of engines offered are set to be trimmed.

“In the 5 series we have four diesel engines on offer.

“I would not bet on there being four diesel engines offered in the next generation vehicle,”

BMW is looking to do some housekeeping in a bid to speed up the development of its electric and plug-in hybrid model range, introduce new models like the X2, and invest more funds into R&D.
