Significant fuel reduction from Mercedes-Benz Actros-trailer combo

Semi-trailer operators could slash their fuel use by as much as 20% into the future with smart engine technology and more aerodynamic trailers.

Mercedes-Benz and the German trailer manufacturer, Krone, have shown a combination that say uses as much 20% less fuel than comparable existing semi-trailer combinations.

Up front is a current-series Mercedes-Benz Actros powered by the latest generation OM 471 six-cylinder in-line diesel engine.

The prime mover also boasting Predictive Powertrain Control (a predictive cruise control system) and low-rolling-resistance tires.

While the trailer, Krone’s new Profi Liner Efficiency, features aerodynamically enhanced curtain-sides and rolls on low-rolling-resistance tires.

Wolfgang Bernhard, head of Daimler Truck and Buses, says the fuel-saving combo is ready to be delivered to European customers.

“Our optimized semitrailer-tractor combination pays off for the environment and our customers,”

“It lowers CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by up to 20%– and the cost can be amortized in about 18 months.”
