The recalls affect 4560 Toyota Prius cars built between April 2009 and April 2012 and 2185 Lexus CT 200h cars built from September 2010 to April 2012.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is overseeing the recalls.
Some inflators could have a small crack in the weld area joining the chambers, which could grow over time and lead to separation of the inflator chambers.
The ACCC warning that one or both sections of the inflator could enter the interior of the vehicle.
If an occupant is present in the vehicle, there is an increased risk of injury.
Affected Toyota Prius/Lexus CT 200h owners will be contacted by mail advising further details of the recall campaign.
