Toyota has claimed bragging rights after finishing 2016 as the nation’s top-selling car brand, while also having Australia’s favourite car.
Albeit, Australia’s most sought-after car in 2016 was actually a ute – the Toyota HiLux.
Toyota has reported its best annual Australian sales since 2013 with 209,610 customer deliveries in 2016, a mammoth 91,393 more than any other brand.
That 2016 sales total represents a 1.6% gain in a market that grew by 2.0%.
But the big story is the performance of the HiLux. In a market that is becoming increasingly competitive the Toyota managed to beat home not just its ute rivals, but also prove more popular than any passenger car too.
Toyota tell us they sold 42,104 HiLux utes in the year, just ahead of the Corolla sedan/hatch total of 40,330.
While Toyota was the car brand to have three models in the top 10 with the Camry finishing as the 6th most popular vehicle among Australian buyers last year.
Tony Cramb is the head of sales and marketing at Toyota Australia, he says the 2016 results are incredibly pleasing.
“HiLux has made history as the first vehicle of its type to stand on top of the sales podium in Australia because it has broad appeal with the car-buying public,”
“The buyer profile has changed dramatically in recent years, with HiLux progressively offering the upmarket features and comfort demanded by families while maintaining its traditional popularity among tradespeople as the consummate workhorse.”
We will bring you more 2016 and December 2016 car sales data analysis this afternoon.
