This was the first time a manufacturer has held both first and second positions in Australia and the first time a non-passenger vehicle, the HiLux, took out top spot with 42,104 sales.
But the Toyota Corolla is off to a good start this year with 2943 units sold in January, a margin of 241 ahead of its rival.
Sales are also up on the previous January for both models.
Senior executive director of Toyota sales and marketing Tony Cramb expects 2017 to be another tight race.
“Australian motorists are the winners from intense competition while increased demand for both vehicles in January is a great omen for the rest of the year.”
