Toyota HiLux and Corolla to duke it out again in 2017

The Toyota HiLux and the Toyota Corolla topped car sales race during the whole of 2016 and after just the first month of the new year, it looks to be the same story at the end of 2017.

This was the first time a manufacturer has held both first and second positions in Australia and the first time a non-passenger vehicle, the HiLux, took out top spot with 42,104 sales.

But the Toyota Corolla is off to a good start this year with 2943 units sold in January, a margin of 241 ahead of its rival.

Sales are also up on the previous January for both models.

But they face some stiff competition from Mazda which topped passenger vehicle sales for the month of January and the Mazda3 is also putting up a fight with 3473 units.

Senior executive director of Toyota sales and marketing Tony Cramb expects 2017 to be another tight race.

“Australian motorists are the winners from intense competition while increased demand for both vehicles in January is a great omen for the rest of the year.”
