Ten things you didn’t know about…tyres

They are absolutely vital to the function of your car and yet despite their importance, tyres are often somewhat overlooked.

They are the only part of your car that touches the road and while we hear it all the time, making sure you have plenty of tread and the correct air pressures in your tyres is absolutely vital.

Aside from all that there’s actually some pretty interesting facts and trivia on tyres that we thought we would share with you.

So here we go, ten things about tyres you might not have known…

  1. The rubber used to make tyres is actually white, tyre manufacturers add carbon black to the rubber to help make it more durable and long-lasting.
  2. Early cars used to have solid rubber tyres bolted to the wheels.
  3. Race car tyres are often inflated with Nitrogen, rather than regular air. The completely dry gas provides more reliable pressure than air which can vary due to water vapor.
  4. The most expensive tyres in the world recently sold for $810,000 AUD.
  5. The Michelin Man’s real name is Bibendum.
  6. The days of the spare tyre are numbered, a large percentage of new cars today come with an inflation kit which saves weight and space.
  7. Goodyear had a bright idea back in the 1960’s, the tyre company experimented with an illuminated tyre that was lit from the inside by glass incandescent bulbs. The softly glowing white tires never left the show circuit.
  8. More than 250 million tyres are discarded each year, most are recycled and used in the process of making asphalt.
  9. Lego makes more tyres than any other company on Earth. The toy company produces 306 million little tyres annually.
  10. In an effort to cut the reliance on rubber, Continental Tyres has begun using dandelions in the production of a new range of their tyres.

  1. I didn’t know that cars were starting to come with inflation kits instead of a spare. I like to have a spare because if something goes catastrophically wrong I don’t have to worry about trying to repair it. I guess I’ll have to pay attention to that now so I can have a spare! Thanks for the interesting facts!
