Teams receive draft 2017 Supercars calendar

Supercars teams have received a copy of the 2017 calendar, which is currently in final draft form pending confirmation of the final race of the year and approval by the FIA.

With the demise of the Homebush race in Sydney after this season a new final round is required, with Newcastle heavily tipped to step into the vacant spot.

It’s expected that round will take place in November rather than December, condensing the season as had been initially planned for 2016.

“It will give us that ‘16 events in 37 weeks’ flow we’ve always wanted,” James Warburton told the sport’s official website.

“We’re trying to keep continuity in terms of where the races are [in the order].

“It has been a little bit tricky with Easter, but we have already presented a number of drafts to the Commission and the Board well in advance, and I think it’s going to be a really good calendar.”

Gold Coast and Townsville have both recently had their contracts renewed while discussions continue around the Queensland Raceway event.

“There’s a lot to do in terms of upgrades and safety at QR, but it’s an important event in Ipswich, so it’s important we get that one locked down and we’re confident we will,” Warburton said.

Kuala Lumpur is also tipped to return after legal issues in Malaysia prevented its running in 2016.
