The September 2017 car sales data is in and the big news is again the decline in sales for the previously dominant Holden brand.

In total, 100,200 new vehicles were delivered to customers in the month, a total that is 2.4% lower than the same month last year.

And while Toyota and Mazda remained at the head of the pack, the other three car brands consistently in the top five all lost ground and this allowed the resurgent Mitsubishi to jump into the top 5.

The Japanese brand knocked Ford out of the top five, however the Blue-oval brand still had reason to celebrate - the Ford Ranger was the best-selling model in the month.

Hyundai fell back 5.9%, and Ford by 1.5%, but it was the performance of Holden and it’s 12.4% dip in sales that stands out.

Holden sales so far this year are down a mammoth 19.6%.

The VFACTS data shows that once again it was pick-up and cab-chassis 4X4 light commercial vehicles, along with small and medium SUVs that were the pick of Aussie car buyers.

4X4 light commercials were up 11%, small SUVs rose 7.9% and medium SUVs increased 3.3%. However, SUV sales overall were down 1.3%.

Interest in passenger cars slipped another 9.3% in the month with a total of less than 4,000 sales.

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries CEO, Tony Weber, says despite the slight downturn in sales, overall it was another strong month for the industry.

“Any month over 100,000 total sales has to be seen as a strong outcome, proving there is continued value for the consumer out in the market,”

“To keep this outcome in perspective, it has to be remembered that the September results of 2015 and 2016 were both very strong, and both those years ended in records.”
