Record year amid SUV boom

The right vehicles, at the right price and at the right time – the planets looked to be aligning perfectly for Chinese luxury SUV brand – HAVAL.

In Australia since 2015 and scoring respectable sales figures, HAVAL locally has big plans for a significant expansion in sales and dealer footprint by 2020 (despite some local challenges outlined below).

Now comes global sales data that shows HAVAL is increasingly becoming a brand to watch.

At a media briefing in Darwin, where details about new and improved HAVAL models were uncovered, HAVAL representatives also briefed the media on 2016/17 sales figures for the brand.

Some of the big points included:

  • 2016 was a record year for Great Wall Motors/HAVAL
  • Global sales increased 2.3% for HAVAL last year
  • The company hit one million sales in a calendar year for first time
  • Company profit was $2 billion USD – up 31%
  • Total global HAVAL SUV sales now total 938,000
  • HAVAL H6 was the biggest selling SUV in China, with 580,000 sales in 2017

Just on the H6, HAVAL reckons it was also the biggest-selling vehicle in the world in November and December last year.

And the brand is moving towards a global presence – HAVAL telling us they now have dealerships in 30 countries and growing.

So, what are these local sales challenges? Chief marketing Officer, Tim Smith, spoke openly about frustrations regarding signing dealerships up to stock the HAVAL product.

According to Mr Smith a number of other car manufacturers have been blocking their dealerships from being able to represent the HAVAL brand.

He said this has now happened a number of times.

“While it is flattering that these other brands must see us as a threat, it is still very disappointing.

“We just want a fair go.”

While Mr Smith did also confirm that the brand was looking at possible alternatives to the traditional dealer sales model and was continuing to look at options to try and increase its local footprint.
