Safety upgrade for Toyota Hilux

Toyota tweaks Hilux to achieve five-star safety.

The Hilux is now a member of the five-star club.

The Toyota Hilux now boasts a five star ANCAP safety rating across almost all variants.

ANCAP has completed the latest round of testing on the ultra-popular Hilux and handed the 4×4 single cab and extra cab variants built from last month (August) the top safety rating.

The upgrade comes after Toyota upgraded the Hilux’s safety credentials by improving side impact resistance, increasing knee protection and adding seat-belt reminders.

The testing authority believes dual-cab Hilux 4×4 variants will follow suit, while no change has been made to the 2WD versions so their ratings remains 4 stars.

ANCAP Chairman Lauchlan McIntosh says Toyota has done a great job improving the Hilux to achieve better safety for owners.

“The light commercial vehicle market has been very competitive in recent years with more fleet buyers and consumers demanding ANCAP 5 star safety ratings.

“This is an excellent case study of a very strong shift in the light commercial vehicle market driven by safety. There is no longer any excuse for fleet buyers when it comes to safety - they should accept nothing less than 5 star safety.”
