Road trip essentials for your car

Six things to take with you

One of the reasons we absolutely love cars is the freedom they bring us, especially the idea of being able to jump in and head off to new places far away.

A plane might be quicker, but a real road trip, especially in Australia, can serve up some terrific experiences along the way – as they say, sometimes the travel is just as important as the destination.

But before you hit the open road there are some things you need to think about and do, beyond just making sure your car is up to the task.

This include putting some thought into ensuring you’re covered should something go wrong a long way from ‘home base’.

So, here’s a few things you might want to consider taking with you in your car on your next adventure seeking road trip…

This might seem boring, but if something goes wrong a long way from you can’t just duck home to grab them.

These include your car registration, warranty and service book, insurance details and roadside assist account details.

And of course, you should never hit the roads without your driver’s license.

First Aid Kit

A good thing to have even if most of your journeys are short, a first aid kit in an area where medical assistance can be a long way away, can be invaluable.

Jumper Leads

No matter how modern, well looked after or expensive your car is flat batteries can and do happen.

And while you might not need them, maybe having a set of jumper leads on board will enable you to assist a fellow motorist?

Basic Tools

Have a think about carrying some basic tools and equipment such as a torch, Philips and flat blade screwdrivers, quality duct tape and a set of work gloves are a great starting point.

Fire Extinguisher

Again, you probably might never need it, but if you ever find yourself in a situation where a fire extinguisher is needed you will be very glad you have it.

Some situations include under bonnet car fires (that do happen) and small fires at the scene of a car accident.

Fuel Station Apps

A recent addition to the car preparation kit – these apps allow you to properly plan your stops and ensure you don’t find yourself stranded with an empty fuel tank.
