Reports Newcastle will take Sydney Supercars Race

Reports tonight say Newcastle will be chosen to host a round of the Supercars from next year.

Fairfax Media reports that the regional city, which is about two hours north of Sydney, is now the likely replacement for the Sydney Olympic Park round.

The reports say Newcastle will take over the season-ending Supercars street race next year and the city and Supercars are deep into negotiations to secure state government backing.

Fairfax Media saying that Supercars chief executive officer James Warburton confirmed to team owners at a briefing in Townsville on Thursday night that Newcastle was the favourite to take over the season finale.

This year’s Sydney 500 will be the last at Sydney Olympic Park, with the end-of-season event scheduled to move to a new street circuit in regional NSW in November, 2017.
