Record car sales for June and first half of 2016

A record June 2016 in car sales has pushed the Australian car industry over the line to register the best first half of the year result ever.

The end of the financial year saw an increase of 2.2% over last June with a record 128,589 units.

This figure has brought the 2016 tally to 598,140, a boost of 3.4% on the previous year helped by a rise in purchases of SUVs and light commercial vehicles and a strong performance by Toyota.

The Japanese maker delivered 22,083 units or 17.2% market share finishing far ahead of Mazda, Hyundai, Holden and Mitsubishi.

The Hyundai i30 maintained its number one position as the best-selling car for June 2016 with 6432 sales, holding the title for the second month in a row.

Toyota came in second and third with the HiLux and Corolla, followed by the Mazda 3 and Ford Ranger all with over 4000 deliveries.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber says many suggested the Federal election would subdue the market but this turned out not to be the case.

“End of financial year is always very busy but June was an exceptional month, proving that competition is fierce and the current market is healthy.”
