You would likely know the Polestar name from the previous Volvo models that offered Polestar enhancements, now, after a more than $950 million AUD investment by the Chinese-owned group, Polestar is a separate car brand.
There will be a focus on electrified performance vehicles.
The first of those vehicles will be the Polestar 1 – a 447kW/1000Nm GT car with a hybrid powertrain.
Coming online from mid-2019, Polestar 1 will be built in China at all-new purpose-built facility, and all subsequent Polestar models will also be produced there.
The Polestar 1 will also differ from subsequent models, Volvo/Geely say they will all have 100% electric drivetrains (and will be called Polestar 2, Polestar 3 etc.).
Polestar 1 Key Data:
- First car from new brand – Polestar
- Orders for Polestar 1 are now open
- First deliveries – mid 2019
- 2+2 seating
- Electric drive range - 150kms
- Built on global Volvo platform
- Full electric suspension
- Double electric rear axle
- Carbon-fibre body
Interestingly, like the Geely-owned electric start-up brand, Lynk & Co, Polestar models will abandon the traditional dealership model.
Instead, Volvo/Geely say the cars will be able to be ordered online and offered on a two or three year subscription basis, with zero deposit (much like a smartphone).
“Polestar 1 is the first car to carry the Polestar on the bonnet. A beautiful GT with amazing technology packed into it - a great start for our new Polestar brand.
“All future cars from Polestar will feature a fully electric drivetrain, delivering on our brand vision of being the new standalone electric performance brand.”
At this stage there is no official confirmation that the Polestar will be brand will be available in Australia, we will keep you updated though in our Polestar News section.
