Minimalism the theme in design of Range Rover Velar

First look at Velar in Australia

We’re just a couple of months from the Australian arrival of the all-new Range Rover Velar.

What’s the Range Rover Velar? Well, in case you missed it, the Velar is the new SUV that will slip seamlessly between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

Arriving in Australia in October, the Velar will be priced from just under $71,000 and power will come from a range of four-cylinder and V6 petrol and diesel engines.

But today, we got a sneak peek of the new offering, and a chance to meet one of the key men responsible for the design of the new Range Rover model.

richard woolley jaguar land roverRichard Woolley (pictured) is the Studio Director for Design Research and Special Vehicle Operations at Jaguar Land Rover.

He made the trek to Australia just to talk to Behind the Wheel and a small handful of other motoring publications.

Richard, who has designed a range of different Jaguar Land Rover products, told us that the design for the Velar came together nicely.

He said the design and engineering phase was smooth, with only a few minor tweaks having to be made along the way.

The Range Rover Velar was also designed from a minimalism perspective, with his design team aiming for the right proportions, and a look that paid tribute to signature Range Rover design elements, such as the floating roof and flat door profiles.

Around the same size as the popular Jaguar F-PACE, the Velar features all aluminium body panels, and new ‘pop-out’ door handles (seen below).

Richard telling us the electric/recessed door handles, which pop back into the closed position as you drive away, help the aerodynamics and also prevent wind noise.

And the Velar name? Richard revealed it was a code name for the original Range Rover from the early 1970’s, and it also means ‘veiled’ in Italian.
