Mazda3 diesel breaks $40,000 barrier

Top-selling Mazda small car gets new diesel option.

The Mazda3 XD Astina only comes in five-door hatch configuration.

Mazda is once again offering Australian small car buyers a diesel engine version of the Mazda3.

Arriving in Mazda dealerships nationwide now, the new Mazda3 XD Astina is powered by a 2.2 litre engine that produces 129kW and 420Nm and fuel consumption as low as 5.0 litres per 100kms.

But, starting at $40,230 for the 6-speed manual and $42,230 for the automatic, the diesel Mazda3 is pushing the boundaries of small car pricing.

To justify those prices, Mazda says the Mazda3 XD Astina is very well-equipped, featuring the same level of specification as the SP25 Astina, including; 18” alloy wheels, LED fog-lamps and black leather seats with suede trim.
