Updated advice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) shows Mazda2 and Mazda RX-8 vehicles will also be recalled as part of the global Takata Airbag Recalls.
As already reported, a number of Mazda models are already affected, the latest recall notice expanding on the number of RX-8’s being recalled and adding the Mazda2 as well.
All of the vehicles affected were sold in Australian between the 10th of July 2003 and the 15th of June 2015.
The ACCC advises that Mazda2 vehicles that carry a VIN between these ranges are affected:
- JM0DE10Y1*0100011 - JM0DE10Y1A0155052
- JM0DE10Y2*0200251 - JM0DE10Y2*0290258
- MM0DE10Y100106386 - MM0DE10Y100151682
While the RX-8 VIN range is now:
- JM0FE103100100007 - JM0FE103100105664
- JM0FE1032*0300005 - JM0FE1032*0301278
The recall advice stating that in the affected vehicles, continued exposure of the air bag inflator to high levels of absolute humidity may cause the front airbag inflator housing to rupture and deploy abnormally in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the frontal airbag.
What are the hazards?
An inflator rupture could result in metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring vehicle occupants.
Mazda Australia will progressively contact all affected customers by mail as soon as parts become available to present their vehicle to their preferred Mazda Dealer for the replacement of the Passenger Side airbag inflator at no charge.
Consumers who require further information should contact Mazda Customer Support on 1800 034 411.
