Lower fuel prices helping cap truck operating costs

But driver expenses were on the up in the U.S. last year

In 2016 it cost U.S. truck owner/operators an average of $1.59 per mile to run their rig, a figure unchanged from 2015.

That was the finding of the most recent American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) Analysis of the Operational Costs of Trucking.

So, why did the cost of running a truck in the U.S. remain the same from 2015 to 2016?

The report says lower fuel costs (down 17% on 2015), as well as the continuing soft economic climate in the U.S., contributed to keeping costs down.

Conversely, the cost of having someone at the wheel of the truck was up.

The study found that driver wages and benefits increased by 5% and 18%, respectively.

That means that driver costs now represent a higher percentage of overall costs than does the fuel that moves the truck along.

While truck owners were also found to be having to foot larger bills for repairs and maintenance for today’s more sophisticated trucks.

“We eagerly await the release of ATRI’s Operational Costs research each year as an important barometer of our fleet performance versus our peers in the industry,” said Bart Middleton, Grammer Industries CEO.
