Lexus IS recalled over airbag issues

A large number of Lexus IS vehicles sold in Australia are being recalled as part of the enormous Takata Airbag Recalls.

The IS airbag recall affects 21,750 vehicle sold in Australia and is being overseen by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Lexus and the ACCC advise that these models, built between these dates will be recalled:

  • IS 250 – built between 31st of August 2005 and 27th December 2011
  • IS 250C – built between 16th of April 2009 and 3rd of November 2011
  • IS 350 – built between 2nd of August 2010 and 26th December 2011
  • IS F – built between 7th August 2008 and 13th December 2011

The ACCC recall notice advises that the front passenger’s airbag inflator may be susceptible to moisture intrusion over time resulting in degradation of the inflator propellant.

In the event of an accident requiring front passenger airbag deployment, abnormal inflator deployment and rupture may occur resulting in metallic projectile fragments increasing the risk of injury to occupants.

Affected Lexus IS owners will be contacted by mail as soon as parts become available.
