Hyundai will have to work hard to restore a little confidence amongst Australian car buyers in the Sonata name.

Sure, we know the Hyundai vehicles of 2014 are light-years ahead of the Hyundai products 15 years ago, but the Sonata, while mildly popular last time it was here, didn’t have the best of reputations.

The reputation was most likely a reason why the Sonata was re-badged the i45 when that model was offered; sadly it came in for much criticism and failed to find many buyers.

Regardless, this new seventh-generation model is on the way and Hyundai say this time around the Sonata will be bettered equipped to handle Australia’s testing climate and less than fantastic road network.

With the new model just unveiled at the New York Auto Show, a local testing program for the Sonata is underway, Hyundai say the Sonata has been put through its paces in the outback and suspension and steering is being tuned locally by Australian engineers.

Interestingly, Hyundai Australia is yet to confirm which engine the Sonata will have here, in the US it will be offered with a 2.4 litre petrol engine that produces 138kW and 241Nm and a 2.0 litre turbo petrol that delivers 182kW and 352Nm.

Hyundai say both engines are under consideration for the Australian market.

With a rather striking new body, Chris Chapman, chief designer, Hyundai Design North America, says the new Sonata was designed to turn heads.

“We crafted the shape of the 2015 Sonata in the same way an award-winning chef refines his recipe over the years,”

“With the 2011 Sonata, Hyundai took the mid-size sedan from a meal to a gourmet dinner. The evolution to Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’s tauter, modern lines reflects the improvements in refinement and driving dynamics for the new Sonata.”

The new Hyundai Sonata will arrive in Australia in the second half of the year with pricing and specification details to be announced in coming months, stay tuned!
