Hyundai to launch plug-in hybrid Genesis

Having challenged the Europeans with their luxury arm the Genesis, Hyundai plans to take on their might on another front introducing a range of Genesis plug-in hybrids.

The Genesis Hybrid Sports sedan made a first appearance at the New York Auto show in March but plans for a production version, the Genesis G70, are in the works in addition to two versions of the Sports model, the G80 and G90.

Hyundai is eager to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and Bentley but says the Genesis Hybrid will be pitted against the BMW 3-Series.

The Korean maker are focusing their efforts into converting the luxury segment into hybrids for better economy and emissions while Head of Genesis operations, Hyundai America CEO Dave Zuchowski says interested buyers would be more likely to bear the cost.

“We believe alternative propulsion engines are going to be really important, even more important in the luxury market than they are in the mainstream market.”
