At the very forefront of the push towards the increased use of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is Iveco and parent company CNH Industrial.

As reported, Iveco recently unveiled a new 460hp LNG version of the Iveco Stralis, and CNH Industrial’s FPT Powertrains took the covers off the new Cursor 13 NG engine in Turin, Italy.

Why the push to use LNG instead of diesel? CNH Industrial say natural gas use in heavy trucks can reduce fuel costs for operators by up to 40%, and reduce fuel consumption by up to 15%.

They also say that testing has confirmed that engines running on natural gas also emit less CO2 and nitrogen oxide and run quieter too.

Now Iveco/CNH Industrial and sister company FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) have co-hosted an event involving some of the biggest players in the European Logistics industry.

The benefits of switching away from diesel to LNG instead was on the agenda.

One of the key speakers was Peter Weiss, Head of EMEA Supply Chain Management & Global Supply Chain Coordination at FCA.

He told delegates that the Iveco Stralis NP 400 trucks in the FCA fleet in Europe are saving over 5,000 tons of CO2 per year.

“Supply Chain moves millions of automotive parts, materials and finished vehicles all over the world, this effort calls for rethinking traditional methods and implementing the most effective and efficient ways to achieve our targets,”

“Together with our logistics partners, we adopted Sustainable Logistics Principles, applying all methodologies to reduce the impact of freight and vehicle movement though the optimization of modes and logistics flows, as well as the adoption of low-emission transport vehicles,”

“We think that the extended application of this technology will ensure FCA’s network competitiveness and our emission footprint reduction.”
