End of the road for Mitsubishi Lancer?

Reports say Mitsubishi is about to pull pin on Lancer…

Mitsubishi Motors seems to be in no hurry to replace the ageing Lancer with an updated model and the reason for that may be about to come to light.

Reports out of the U.S. today say the Mitsubishi Lancer is about to be dropped completely.

Automotive News has quoted Don Swearingen, executive vice president at Mitsubishi Motors North America, as saying Lancer production will end in August.

Mitsubishi Lancer History:

  • First produced in 1973.
  • Early versions of the Lancer were sold in Australia as the Mitsubishi Colt.
  • The Lancer has been continuously available in Australia since 2002.
  • The current body-style has been in production since 2007.
  • Production of the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO ended last year.

At this stage we haven’t got confirmation whether that will be simply production for the U.S. market, where the Lancer has struggled to find buyers, or whether all markets are affected.

In Australia last month Mitsubishi sold 580 Lancers, a number 6% up on December 2015.

Sales of the Lancer though were down 14% across 2016 with small car buyers moving towards more up to date offerings such as Hyundai i30, Mazda3, Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

We will bring you more Mitsubishi Lancer News as it comes to hand.
