Electric power for Hino’s new small bus

The Hino Poncho is a small bus with what looks like a big future – now comes news that Hino will build the offering with an all-electric powertrain.

As we’ve covered previously, Poncho is aimed at operators requiring a bus that is more manoeuvrable than a standard city bus, it also has an extremely low floor/loading height so could be attractive to those who need to transport passengers with personal mobility issues.

Hitting the market in Australia earlier in the year, at this stage the offering boasts only the one engine/transmission combo – 180hp diesel/five-speed auto.

But that could be about to change.

Hino has just shown an electric drive version of the Poncho at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Known as the Hino Poncho Electric Vehicle (EV), Hino tell us it the bus operates based on a high-frequency charging concept, whereby it is charged approximately every 10 km along its operating route.

They say that it has performed well in the three Japanese cities it currently operates in and when driving, it runs quietly and emits zero exhaust emissions.

At this stage the Poncho EV will only be available in Japan, though we will keep you updated with any further details as info comes to hand.

Hino also revealed new-generation versions of the Hino 500 and 700 Series, though once again the Japanese truck maker tell us that these are just for the Japanese market, at this stage.

The Hino 700 Series shown features all new interior and exterior, a pre-collision/autonomous braking system, and a downsized 9 litre engine.

While the 500 Series engine has been improved to meet new Japanese exhaust emission standards and also gets the emergency braking system.

While the downsized 5 litre engine brings an increase in performance and improvement in fuel efficiency according to Hino.
