Michael is looking for a small, cheap and economical car.
Hi, I’m looking for a small car to commute to work in. Fuel economy needs to be as good as possible and I have up to about $8000 to spend.
Seating for at least two is required and the car needs to be safe. I have looked at a Suzuki Alto, what do you think of them?
Hi Michael, thanks for the email. Yes, Suzuki Alto is a good little option and was regularly the winner of the ‘cheapest car to own’ awards handed out by the nations motoring clubs (more info here). $8,000 should get you a very late-model Suzuki Alto as they only cost about $13,000 brand new!
The Alto (2009 on) had a four-star ANCAP safety rating, was built in Japan and you can check out our most recent Suzuki Alto review here.
You mention fuel economy, how about a Toyota Prius? Sure, you aren’t going to get a car as new as the Suzuki Alto, though you will get more space and a hybrid Toyota Prius (reviewed here) will probably use about the same amount of fuel.
A hybrid car purchase will also allow you take advantage of green car parking spaces that now feature in most Australian capital cities.
Another option is the Volkswagen up! Like the Alto this one had a starting price of less than $15,000 and was surprisingly fun to drive. Safe and efficient, try and find an up! and take it for a test-drive. You can read our 2013 Volkswagen up! review here.
Other cars that you will come across in second hand car yards, or our own Car Classifieds, that are worth a look at include the Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Polo, Mitsubishi Mirage and Nissan Micra.
