We started off on solid rubber tyres, then tyre technology was revolutionised with the invention of pneumatic (or air inflated) tyres.
But now the wheel looks set to turn again (pardon the pun) with Michelin championing new airless tyre technology.
Known as the Michelin Vision concept tyre (additional coverage here), the technology has just been named one of the ’25 Best Inventions of 2017′ by TIME Magazine.
Terry Gettys, global head of research and development for Michelin Group, welcomed the acknowledgement.
“On behalf of Michelin and the many designers and engineers involved in bringing the Vision concept to life, we are honoured to receive this recognition from the editors at TIME Magazine,”
“We believe the Vision concept is as beautiful as the natural world that inspires it, combining multiple technologies that together project the course for Michelin’s innovation in the years ahead,”
“The ideas presented in the Vision concept have taken hold among vehicle designers, demonstrating a feasible vision of how the tire can provide essential contributions to sustainable mobility in the future.”
The revolutionary tyre is made from organic and renewable materials and can be recharged using 3D-printed tread.
It also features built in sensors that scan the road and it also tells the driver when it requires maintenance.
We will keep you updated with further developments regarding the Michelin Vision concept tyre as additional info comes to hand.
