2017 Isuzu MU-X Update Launch Review

Isuzu Ute brings the updated Isuzu MU-X SUV to Australia…

Australia has proven a massive success for the hardworking team at Isuzu Ute and this updated MU-X looks set to continue pushing sales skyward.

It’s nearly four years since I traveled over to Thailand to check out the Isuzu SUV on the model’s international launch, I remember at the time feeling that the MU-X was going to be a popular choice back home.

And it certainly has been, particularly up against the co-developed GM product that has been sold here as both the Colorado 7 and, more recently, the Holden Trailblazer.

So, what does the Isuzu MU-X welcome in this latest update? Well, Isuzu tell us the changes have all been based on local feedback and include:

  • Updated front styling with new Bi-LED headlights
  • Updated LED taillights
  • Improved cabin sound deadening
  • Tweaked suspension and steering feel
  • Addition of soft touch materials/coverings in the cabin
  • New interior highlights such as alloy and chrome
  • Updated alloy wheel designs
  • A new paint colour - Havana Brown (shown below)

Of course, as we covered earlier in the year, Isuzu has also recently introduced a new 3.0 litre turbo-diesel engine in the MU-X/D-MAX and that brings with it a very respectable 130kW/430Nm.

While total cost of ownership numbers for the Isuzu have also been helped with the recent addition of a five-year warranty, five-year roadside assist, and five-year capped price servicing.

The updated Isuzu MU-X is now more people-friendly.

The interior ‘soften up’ is very much welcome and helps make the Isuzu product a more enjoyable vehicle to travel in, especially over longer distances.

The softer arm-rests are a great addition - significantly lifting comfort and the overall feel.

While the MU-X cabin, overall, is quieter and this is especially noted in regards to wind noise and other external noises.

You can still hear the diesel engine though, but not at levels that are off-putting.

It still does everything competently - road manners, fuel economy, adaptability, cabin space, towing capacity, features etc.

But it shines with five-star safety, the improved after-sales policies and fair pricing.

I would take a mark or two off the Isuzu product, as I have done every time I have driven it, for the storage box behind the third-row seat.

This always seems to stand out and show that the seats don’t quite fold into the floor.

As we have also covered many times before, the Isuzu MU-X sits comfortably between the ‘softer’ seven-seat offerings like the Mazda CX-9 and Toyota Kluger, and then the larger Toyota Prado‘s and the like.

Boasting the same towing capacity and off-road ability (4×4 version) as most pick-ups/utes, the SUV gives you the two extra seats and a proper enclosed cargo area.

Well-priced, competent, comfortable enough for the family and tough enough for the rough stuff, the Isuzu MU-X now makes an even more compelling argument as one of the most versatile vehicles available in 2017.
